Tech Trek
Tech Trek is a week-long Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-focused residential summer camp for girls entering 8th grade. The camp is hosted by AAUW-Florida and designed to develop interest and excitement about STEM fields as well as self-confidence in young women. The university campus experience provides girls a unique way to explore topics related to STEM careers. Hands- on instruction and field trips encourage maximum interaction and instruction in environments where STEM professionals work.
Since 2014, our branch has sent 93 girls to the Tech Trek camps which are focused on STEM. AAUW Lake/Sumter is the only organization in our area that offers this opportunity to middle school girls.

This year, the two summer camps were held at Stetson University in Deland and Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter. Each camp accommodated 48 girls. Campers were nominated by teachers and AAUW branches throughout Florida. Due to branch fundraising events and donations from many individuals and local organizations, our branch funded 10 girls from Lake and Sumter counties at the 2026 summer camps. "My daughter Berlyn just finished her week of tech trek camp. She chose her classes and picked her core class as structural engineering, she also took other courses such as chemistry, coding, dna extraction, flip grid, nextEra energy, and search engine algorithms. She got to build a house out of spaghetti noodles and marshmallows, towers out of balsa wood that had to withstand at least ten pounds of rice being placed on top.
