STEM:
Tech Trek

Tech Trek Campership Awards

Emphasis on STEM education for girls and women dates to the beginning of our branch. Since 2014, our support has been for Tech Trek, a week-long residential summer camp focused on STEM for rising 8th grade girls. In the last 10 years, we have sent 70 girls to camp; now, Tech Trek is our signature program...one of the features that distinguishes Lake/Sumter AAUW from other local charities.

Tech Trek is a week-long STEM-focused residential camp for girls going into the 8th grade. Hosted by AAUW-Florida, the camp is held on a university campus; it is designed to develop interest and excitement about STEM fields as well as self-confidence in young women. Campers are nominated by teachers and AAUW branches to attend. The university campus experience gives girls a chance to think about the kinds of opportunities a college education can afford them. Hands-on instruction and field trips encourage maximum interaction and instruction in environments where STEM professionals work.

In 2024, we are delighted to send 13 more rising 8th grade girls from Lake and Sumter Counties to this unique STEM education experience.
